Death takes J. T. McDowell
James Thomas McDowell, a former long time Ellensburg resident died at the Yellowstone Park Hospital at Mammoth Hot Springs, Mont., Sunday, Aug. 21.
McDowell was born April 6, 1872 in Crestline, Kansas, and crossed the plains in a covered wagon with his parents in 1882 from Cherokee County to the Menastash Canyon in the Kittitas Valley where he farmed with his father. He attended the first class at the Ellensburg Normal School and later was enrolled for a time at Washington State College. He went to Alaska during the gold rush in 1900 and returned to Seattle for a time before coming back to Ellensburg.
McDowell took as his bride, Della Mae Holland in Ellensburg, Sept. 11, 1905. She preceded him in death June 25, 1925. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Knights of Pythias Lodge, having received his 50-year pin last year. After his trek to Alaska Mr. McDowell, with his brother Will McDowell, operated a grocery store at the corner of 5th and Pearl and also a variety store on Pearl St. for many years. In 1930 he moved to Yakima where he also operated a grocery and in 1936 moved to Seattle where he has since made his home.
Survivors include one son, Gerald E. McDowell of Renton; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Kennedy of Seattle and Mrs. Edythe Reede of Fairbanks, Alaska; 6 grandchildren and a number of cousins, many of them in Ellensburg.
Services will be held for Mr. McDowell Friday, Aug. 26 at the Evenson Chapel. Interment will follow in the IOOF cemetery.
