He was born November 13, 1867 in Orinoka, Minnesota. He came to South Dakota in 1880 and lived at Pierre, Huron and Rapid City before coming to Deadwood in 1881. A couple of years later he returned to Rapid City, and worked on some placer claims on the Bonanza Bar, which was later known as the Stratosphere bowl, during the summers of 1883 and 1884. For the next five or six years he stayed in Rapid City and drove stagecoaches on the Pierre road the last year the Northwestern stage ran on that line. He clerked in the International Hotel.
He was married to Emma Shirley, St Joseph, Missouri, in 1889, and that year started in business in Pierre but sold out and came back to the Black Hills in 1890, locating at Hot Springs where he was superintendent of the Water, Light and Power company until 1894 when he moved to Ragged Top in the northern Hills.

In 1906 he moved to Deadwood where he bot (sic) the Lucky Strike property, building a 30-ton mill which he operated until 1909, when he went to work for the Homestake.
He has been at the Masonic temple in Deadwood since 1918 and he had charge of the Mogul mine and mill property from 1929 until 1940 when the property was sold to the Bald Mountain Mining compnay.
