Born in Ireland, Charles McLaughlin came to America in 1846 aboard the ship MERCHANT OF NEW YORK, sailing from Londonderry and arriving at the Port of Philadelphia on July 6. With him were his wife and three children, all born in Ireland (to be joined by two more children born in America). Likely driven by the potato famine, also with the McLaughlins aboard ship were James and Mary McDonald and Patrick Lynch. The eight people left Ireland with just 4 boxes and 3 barrels. Charles' birth is believed to have occurred between 1818 and 1823. Photo taken in 1965 by DeeAnna Allum Granston.
