Born In Ireland in 1845, in 1846 William arrived in America with his parents, Charles and Elizabeth (McDonald) McLaughlin. (See "Charles McLaughlin" and "Elizabeth McDonald McLaughlin" at this web site.) In Northumberland County, Pennsylvania -- where the family lived for a few years -- two more siblings were born. The 1850s brought the family from Pennsylvania to Des Moines County, Iowa, where William lived thereafter. At age 16, he enlisted in the Civil War, serving from 1862-1865 (Corporal, Company G, 39th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteers). In 1876, in Escanaba, Michigan, he married Mary Ann Counihan, also of Irish heritage, who had been born in Illinois. Of their eleven children, four married and had children of their own. William, his wife, most of his children, and many members of his extended family are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dodgeville. --DeeAnna Allum Granston
