In 1740 he was originally buried in the Garnisonskirche in Potsdam, from 1945-1953 his sarcophagus was relocated to the Elisabethkirche in Marburg (Hesse). After that his remains were kept at the Hohenzollern Castle near Hechingen (Baden-Württemberg). In 1991 his sarcophagus returned to Potsdam and is now finding its final (?) resting place in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Mausoleum near the Friedenskirche, inside the Royal Gardens of the Sanssouci Castle.

The original black marble sarcophogus was destroyed in 1945, and the current one is a copy made from copper.Frederick William I. from 1713 until his death 1740 King in Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg and Kurfürst of the Holy Roman Empire. He is nicknamed "Soldier King." He focused his attention on the construction of Brandenburg Prussia as an independent military power and strong “Merkantilstaat.” He created a comprehensive public finance system and introduced tight austerity measures at the Prussian court. Because of his extensive reforms, he was described as "Prussia's greatest inner king."
