She and her husband emigrated to the USA about 6 weeks after their marriage, traveling in the ship "Marshfield" on 8 April 1854. As Charlotte and William Clarke were crossing the plains, William was injured in a buffalo stampede and then passed away at Devils Gate, Wyoming.
