History - A Utah pioneer of 1848. From the journal of Laura Mariah Gibbs Stephens: My grandfather Gibbs was a merchant and large properity owner in New York. He owned a large hotel, called an inn in those days, and at which Genral Lafeiett stoped once when on the way to the front during the war. His hotel and another building of his burned down in 1823 but he had insurance. In 1825 a volunteer fire department was organized and Horace was one of the first to join.
Horace might have been in Independance, Mo. at the time the Saints were driven out.
My grandfather brought $30,000 worth of merchandise to Salt Lake Vally and had a store in the old Fort, now Pioneer Park and there they lived in a little log house until he built the large home on 1st West near Lanton Connor and the properity is now owned by the Felt family. He lived here until he died in Aug. 18, 1875, of old age. He was born March 23rd 1787. He was a magstrate in early days too in this city.
