Son of James Caswell Carroll and Julia Ann Watson of Anderson Co., TX. James was the husband of Ida Broughton and the father of Merrill Cody Carroll of Idalou, TX and Willard Floyd Carroll of Big Spring, TX. James Joshua Carroll moved his family by train from Palestine to Lubbock, TX in 1920. Joshua rented a box car and paid for the trip by selling sweet potatoes and syrup made in Anderson County. He was impressed with the Lubbock area because of the ease to plow the ground and that he could plant more cotton in a very short time. He only had to plow the ground one time in Lubbock verses several times in Anderson County. Another memory of his son Cody's was prior to the trip. The family had to eat all of their chickens. The Dock Broughton family moved at the same time but only remained in Lubbock for a short period before returning to Anderson Co., TX.
