Robert enlisted in the Marines 11 May 1967, at a New Haven Recruiting Office.
Arriving in Vietnam 14 November 1967 Robert was assigned to the 1st Platoon of Alpha Company, 3rd Recon Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. Robert was the team leader of a recon team of 7 men when they encountered hostile forces while on a patrol 21 kilometers southwest of Ba Long Airfield. Robert died as a result of gunshots wound penetrating the right side of his back and lower leg from hostile sniper fire.
Survived by his mother and stepfather, Emma J and Robert J Lockard of 13705 E Ravenne Road, Chardon, Ohio and his father, Robert L Scheidel
