Robert L. Scheidel, Sr. of Burlington, beloved husband and best friend of Elizabeth "Libby" Backes Scheidel, died Friday May 7, 2004 at home. Bob and "Libby" were married for more than 41 years. Mr. Scheidel was born September 18, 1927 in Burlington and was a son of the late William and Mary (Feyk) Scheidel. He lived most of his life in Burlington, was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, and retired from Clean Harbors of Connecticut in 1994. He enjoyed fishing and for most of his life he was a carpenter. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, Bristol where he was a member of the Golden Agers, a life member of the Burlington Men's Club, a 39 year member of the American Legion Post 122, Burlington, and was a life member of the Bristol Lodge of Elk's #1010. In addition to his wife, Mr. Scheidel is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Ann Scheidel of Stone Mountain, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Gilman Dubay of Canton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gladys and Joseph Backes of Burlington, and Carol Howland of Canton; a sister-in-law, Arlyne Scheidel of Avon; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Kathy Cerruto of Canton; and several cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Cpl. Robert L. Scheidel, Jr., two brothers, Albert and Richard Scheidel, and three sisters, Eva Scheidel, Dorothy Fern, and Edna Maskaitis. Funeral services will be held on Monday May 10, 2004, 9 A.M. from Funk Funeral Home 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol to St. Stanislaus Church, Bristol for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 8 P.M. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus Church, 510 West St., Bristol, CT 06010 or to the Bristol VNA Hospice, 195 Maltby St., Bristol, CT 06010.
