First trace of William Peter Cartright is in West Carroll Parish, Louisiana in 1850. The census shows he was born in Tennessee and living with his widowed mother Susan Cartright. John Cartright, b. 1790 is shown on the same census as having died in January 1850.

John Cartright and Susan Ragain were married in Tennessee and settled in Lowndes Co., Mississippi on lands ceded to the U.S. by the Choctaws in 1830.

William P. Cartright married his 1st wife, "Lucy" in Louisiana; they had three children: Susan, Benjamin, and Abigal. He then married his 2nd wife, Mary Adeline Jones ca. 1866 in Cooke Co., Texas.
