Son of William P. and Mary Adeline (Jones) Cartright.

He married Wittie M. Carson on July 15, 1907. After they were married they lived at Marlow, Indian Territory and then moved near to his sister, Iola Gounah at "Pooleville" in Carter County.

The family story is told that Wittie's husband, James Walter Cartwright had been struck by lightning and killed ca. 1913. He had been plowing fields with his brother-in-law, Henry Tapp. They finished for the day and were climbing over a barbwire fence when he was killed.
