Born in LeRoy Township. Parents: John Dorsey Speer and Hannah Eliza Wiseman.

From the Monitor Review, April 18, 1985:

Elizabeth June Speer, youngest daughter of John and Hannah Speer, was born on June 14, 1900 at LeRoy, Mn.

She married Norman Bernard Finkelson on February 12, 1925 at the Lutheran parsonage in Adams, Mn. To this union two sons were born - Norman Eugene and Daryl Dean.

The couple farmed in the Adams area until Norman's death on January 22, 1938 from a farm accident. Betty moved into Adams with her sons where she worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company and as a clerk in various stores. She was always blessed in finding work to support herself and two sons.

In 1960 Betty moved to St. Paul, Mn. to be near her family. She lived with her son, Daryl until her health failed in February. She was in the hospital for seven weeks prior to her death from heart failure. She passed away on April 5, 1985 at the age of 84 years, at the White Bear Lake Care Center, where she was for only one week.

She is survived by her sons: Norman and wife, Juanita, St. Paul, Mn.; Daryl and his fiance, Linda Burman of White Bear Lake, Mn.; four grandchildren, Stephen, Mary McEathron, William and David; three great grandchildren, Sara, Abraham and Kristy McEathron; one brother, Elgar Speer, LeRoy, Mn.; two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Muriel) Rosenthal, Tripoli, Ia. and Mrs. John Lewison (Belva) Rose Creek, Mn. and a host of relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; parents and two brothers.

Betty was a member of the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams for many years and a devoted mother and grandmother. She will be missed greatly by her family.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 1985 at the Henry Holcumbe Funeral Home in St. Paul with the Reverend Craig Richter officiating.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Little Cedar Cemetery with the Adams Funeral Home and Reverend Allen Gunderson officiating. Pallbearers were her grandson, David Finkelson and nephews Kenneth Speer, Dale Speer, Virgil Speer, John Aanonson and Curtis Lewison.
