English Aritocracy. Viscount Stafford. Born the son of Sir Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel, and Lady Alethea Talbot. He was created a knight in the order of Bath at the coronation of Charles I. In February 1626, he married Mary Stafford, sister of the last Baron Stafford and that title devolved to him in September 1640. He was afterward created a viscount. He lived in exile in Holland with Charles II court until the Restoration in 1660. After a return to England, enemies at court included his name among those on a list of Catholic lords to be proscribed. He was committed to the Tower in October 1678 where he remained until a decision was made to put him on trial before the House of Lords on November 30, 1679. His enemies assured his condemnation by 55 votes to 31. He remained confined at the king's pleasure until he was attainted and beheaded on Tower Hill. He has been proclaimed a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church.
