ARMSTRONG

Andrew Benjamin and Mary Jane (Mollie) Armstrong came to Nolan County in the late 1880's. Andrew Benjamin was born in Arkansas on April 5, 1848. Mollie was born to Randolph and Sarah Ann Cheek on January 8, 1855. They married on March 6, 1876.

While living in Washington and Williamson Counties, six children were born. Three lived only a short while and are buried there. Benjamin Everett, Henry Franklin and Mary Edna traveled with their parents to Nolan County, settling south of Hylton near Church Peak.

Later, the family moved to the southeastern part of Nolan County. Emmitt Clinton and William Wayne were born in 1890 and 1893. Three other children died as babies and are buried in the Hylton Cemetery.

Andrew Benjamin was blind, but was known to do all the chores around the house and be seen in any part of the field. He died in 1927 and Mollie in 1928. Both are buried in the cemetery at Hylton.

Mary Edna married James Monroe Porter and lived in the Sweetwater area. Benjamin Everett married Eva F. Chandler of the Shep Community in 1900. He died in 1904 as a result of a ginning accident in Hylton and is also buried there.

Henry Franklin married another Chandler sister, Nina Inez, on March 15, 1903. They spent their sixty-one years of marriage on and near the Armstrong home place. In 1918, Henry bought the Aunt Julie Copeland land which joined the old homeplace.

Henry was known for his loving to talk, visit and hunt. Nina Inez was known for her good meals and fed many peddlers and travelers coming through the country. It was said they tried to get to the Armstrong house at meal time. Many good times were shared in their home.

Dad and Mammy, as they were called by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always had a good supply of food, candy and fireworks on holidays. Henry died in 1964 and Nina Inez in 1967.

A son, Alton Denton, born in 1904, married Johnnie Byrd of Wingate. A daughter, Vivian Elsie, was born in 1906 and married John Thomas Hipp of the Collins Community near Blackwell. Alton and Vivian's school years were spent at Upper Valley Creek, or Cedar Knob School, which was located on the northwest corner of the Armstrong land. Alton died in 1976, having spent most of his seventy-two years in Nolan County. Vivian Hipp now lives in Blackwell, Texas.

There are three grandchildren of Henry and Inez Armstrong: Mrs. James (Mildred) Linsley of Dallas, Harold F. Armstrong of San Angelo and Alta Jean Sawyer of Blackwell. Also, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren are descendants of this family.

The land was settled by Andrew Benjamin Armstrong and the land added by Henry F. Armstrong is still owned and enjoyed by family members.
