Retired Methodist Minister, 73, Dies

The Rev. Emmett C. Armstrong, 73, a Methodist minister for 25 years with pastorates including the Grace Methodist Church of Abilene, Big Spring and others, died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital. He had been hospitalized since Sunday. His home was at 1541 Lillius.

Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Hubert Thompson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O. B. Herring, pastor of Asbury Methodist Church in Midland. Burial will be in Hylton Cemetery in Nolan County under direction of Elliott's Funeral Home.

Born Oct. 13, 1890 in Taylor, Rev. Armstrong moved with his parents to Hylton in 1891. He married Pearl Harkins there on Dec. 19, 1909. The couple lived on a farm near Nolan until 1917.

Rev. Armstrong joined the Methodist Church in 1914 and was active as a layman, including posts of Sunday School Superintendent and Steward until he entered the ministry in April of 1933. His first assignment was a circuit in Dimmitt. He later served many churches in the Northwest Texas Conference.

He retired in 1958 in Childress and returned to Abilene. He was teacher of a men's Bible class at First Methodist Church and preached part-time at a number of area churches. Rev. Armstrong stressed evangelistic works and conducted numerous revivals in West Texas during his active ministry.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Vernon, of 1909 Ross; a sister, Mrs. Edna Porter of Sweetwater; two brothers, H. F. of Wingate and W. W. Armstrong of San Angelo; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Garner, Hugh Ragland, Gene Summers, Clay Davis, R. L. Brown, Sr. and Ferrell Boyd.
