Obituary

Death of Mrs. Mary J Bailey
Mrs. Mary J Bailey, nee Hinson, departed this life on January 23, 1928 at the home of her son, W. C. Smith, after a lingering illness. Grandma Bailey, as she was generally known had reached the age of 86 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was born March 17, 1836 at Belleville ,Illinois and came to Missouri as a child. In the days when she could get about she was very active in church and neighborhood affairs. She went far and near to help care for the sick . She had always a word of comfort or the sad and was always ready to help the needy. Left a widow with a family of small children she raised them all to manhood and womanhood and then reared a family of motherless grandchildren to maturity.
She leaves three sons, Wm. C. "Simm" Smith , Benj. Bailey and Edw. Bailey to mourn her loss, also 54 grandchildren and 94 great-grandchildren. Three sisters Mrs. Capehart, Mrs. Barbaud, and Mrs. P.J. Jennings and three brothers W.C. Hinson, Alfed Hinson and S.D. Hinson also survive her.
She was one of the charter members of the Prospect Baptist Church and remained a staunch Christian to the end. Thus passes one of the last of our pioneers, who kept her family of little ones together through the dark days of the Civil war and saw husband and brothers go forth to fight, to return no more and lived to see grandsons cross the seas to take part in the great World War and return.
She was laid to rest in Prospect Cemetery. The funeral was conducted by W.C. Hinson assisted by Revs. J E Short and Walter Thurmond.
