James had been serving in the US Marine Reserves, before going into active duty.
He arrived in Vietnam 28 February 1968 on his 18th birthday and was assigned to Delta Battery, 2nd Battalion, 13th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. James died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body, while engaged against hostile forces in the
vicinity of Ngok Tavak and 8 kilometers south southwest of Kham Duc. James's body and that of other Marines were not recovered.
He was repatriated 8 September 1999 and was identified 30 March 2005.
Survived by his mother, Izettlie E Sargent and his sister, Geneva Casey all of Anawalt, West Virginia.
His father, Millard C Sargent was deceased.
