Spelling of her first name taken from the cemetery book in Blakesburg, Iowa

Melinda was the daughter of Daniel Mitchell III and Mary Overstreet. She was also the sister to Paulina who married Cyrus' brother Hiram Van Cleave.

Melinda and Cyrus were married July 17, 1817 in Shelby Co., Kentucky and the parents of at least a dozen children.

Melinda and her husband were one of the first pioneers in this Iowa area. With the help of Theophelus Blake, they laid out the town of Blakesburg, Iowa in 1850. This village is the oldest hamlet in the county. There was some thought in changing the towns name to Cleavesburg in the late 1800. (Possibly after Cyrus' death in his honor?)
Cyrus donated some of his land for the Blakesburg's cemetery, which he was not able to use. Cyrus was killed in an accident in Baxter Springs, Cherokee Co., Kansas, September 1872, and buried there. He was on his way home to Iowa from Gonzales, Texas after visiting with Van Cleave relatives in the Texas area. Melinda died the following February after her husband's death at the age of 73, a month shy of being 74.23y 10m 20d
