Cyrus Van Cleave was born in Shelby County, Kentucky November 12, 1795. He was about 2 when his father was captured by the Indians. He was married in Shelby County July 17, 1817 to Malinda Mitchell, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Overstreet) Mitchell. Her father died and her mother married Robert Wilson and they all went to Iowa together, settling in Monroe and Wapello counties. While on the way home from Texas after a visit with their son, Cyrus died in the falloff 1872 and was buried in Kansas near Baxter Springs. Malinda died the next February 4, 1873.

Cyrus was a farmer and cabinet maker and had quite a lot of money, but loaned it to his son in Texas, who bought cattle with it. They all died and the money was lost. Malinda is buried in the cemetery at Blakesburg, Iowa, which
Cyrus gave to the town. He and Theophilus Blake laid out the town, and it was called Cleaveland, but through some scheme of Mr. Blake it was renamed Blakesburg. In this cemetery is buried his step-mother, Sarah Garner Van Cleave, his son Albert Mitchell and Massey, his wife and two of their children and many others.
