The citizens of Wilkes County and especially the Boomer community mourn the loss of Mrs. Arlee Broyhill Andrews, age 94, who passed away at home in Boomer on Saturday, June 7, 2014.
A celebration of life service will be conducted Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Little Rock Baptist Church in Boomer with Rev. Robert Earl Webb and Rev. Robert Livingston officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with the family receiving friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:30 PM in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Andrews was born September 5, 1919 to the late Isaac Jefferson and Ada Belle Carlton Broyhill in their home in Boomer. She attended Appalachian State Teacher's College. The late John W. Andrews, also of Boomer, swept her off her feet and they were married in August of 1939 and settled in Boomer on the family farm now known as AH and W Farms.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Andrews was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Broyhill Greer; two brothers, James Lloyd Broyhill and Vernon Carlton Broyhill.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Bradley and husband, Corkey of Boomer; a son, Dr. Robert William Andrews and wife, Phyllis of Durham; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Arlee Hendrix, Nicholas Charles Hendrix, John Kelly Hendrix, Ellen Arlee Andrews and Ross C. Andrews; one great-grandson, Charles William Herrera; and one sister, Naomi Broyhill Triplett of Winston-Salem.
Arlee was an active member of Little Rock Baptist Church and served in many capacities over the years. She was also a member of the Wilkes County Home Demonstration Club and leader in the 4-H Club in the Little Rock community. She was instrumental in beginning the library at the old Boomer School and was a substitute teacher at Boomer-Ferguson Elementary School. She was well known for being a wonderful cook, having a green thumb in growing beautiful flowers, especially roses she provided for graduation ceremonies at Wilkes Community College, floral arrangements for the church, and assisting many brides with floral arrangements and bouquets for their weddings, and creating beautiful needlework and quilting. She opened her home with love and always showed everyone warm hospitality. Everyone always left with sweet memories from a visit in her home.
Arlee was a charter member of the Board of Trustees of Wilkes Community College serving from the time of its inception, January 1, 1965 to June 30, 1995. She was appointed to the board by the Wilkes County Commissioners and worked diligently to make the college a major center for education in northwestern North Carolina. During her trusteeship she held the offices of Secretary for the Board and also served as Vice-Chairman. If you talked with Arlee about the college, she sang its praises and expressed the impact it has made on the citizens of Wilkes and surrounding counties who would not have had an opportunity to further their education beyond high school if it were not for the community college.
Dr. Gordon Burns stated that "Wilkes Community College owes Arlee Andrews sincere appreciation for the dedication and guidance she offered to its Board of Trustees from the time the college was organized in 1965 until 1995. She was a charter member of the board who served under the college's first three presidents, Dr. Howard Thompson, Dr. David Daniel and Dr. James Randolph. Her spirit remains alive here on the campus. In 1987, her husband, John Andrews, and her family honored Mrs. Andrews by dedicating a garden in her honor. The Arlee Andrews garden is located outside the Walker Center."

Brenda Anderson: "I feel blessed to have had Arlee as an aunt. She was very special to all her nieces. We got to enjoy her wonderful cooking and have many recipes she shared. She also helped us learn to can, freeze, mend and sew. Aunt Arlee grew and arranged beautiful flowers, especially roses which she shared with us on special occasions. As we got married, she honored us with a luncheon or tea at her lovely home. She was always ready to listen and offer advice when we had a problem. Aunt Arlee was truly a Southern Belle whom we loved very much. She touched our lives in so many ways we will never forget."
Gail Walsh: "Arlee is a marvelous example of God's love. She was a fine and gracious lady who will be missed by everyone."
Betty Jo Burcham: "I lost a dear, dear friend whom I loved so much. I will always treasure all the sweet memories she has left behind. She was truly one of my favorite people. She was a lady with a lot of class, compassion for others, and was both beautiful inside and outside with a kind word for everyone she met. She also was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother (referred to as "Mama E"), homemaker/cook, and a Christian. Her life made a difference and she set an example of how a Christian should live. She was an inspiration to me and all her dear friends. I thank God for giving her 94 wonderful years."
Arlee will be missed in her community and by all her family and friends who admired her as a wonderful lady who was an inspiration and role model for all who have crossed her path.
