Son of Lytle (Little) T. Adams and Permelia ?. Husband of Mary May Tommie Clarke of Tennessee and Emma Covington of Mississippi. Father of Florie L., John P. Jr., Gladice T., Marion L. and Arthur.

Mr. Adams was a founder and first president of the People's Bank and Trust founded Oct. 5, 1906, opening in 1907. He served as bank president from 1906-1924. He built the now famous Tower House which later became a historical Inn located on the town square in Manchester, Tn. He also owned several lots on the square and a store located at 210 Spring Street. He was an influential merchant in town for 57 years.


During the 1880 census for Coffee county, TN. John is enumerated as living in his mother Permelia Adams household at 23 years of age. He is a store clerk. There is one brother, George P.Adams, age 20 also living in the home.

The 1860 census for Coffee county, Tn lists Lite (Lytle or Little)b. 1817, Parmelia (Permela)b.1825 with children Narcissa b. 1853 , John and George b. 1859. also living with the family is May Adams age 14.

John and his first wife Mary appear in the 1900 census for Coffee county, Tn. with their children. John and Emma appear in the 1910 census with John's children from his first marriage in Coffee County, TN Living with the family is Mattie France, a widow and her child Willie (enumerated as household servants). By 1920 John is again widowed and is living with his son John P. Jr. and his wife and one other son, Clark Armestead Adams in Coffee County, TN. He lists his birth place as North Carolina in this census and reports his parents are from Virginia. In 1930, John remains widowed and is living with his son Clark and his wife Mary with their two children. John died intestate without a will and his estate was distributed among his heirs, Floy Carden, John Adams Jr., Clark Adams and Ruby Meadows.
