Julia Moore, a longtime resident of Birdsong Road in Prince George County, VA was born in Sussex County, VA. She was the youngest child of Adolphus Watkins and Ninnie Bet Jones Blakes Watkins who died in 1997 at age 112.
At an early age, Julia joined Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Jarratt, VA. She remained a loyal and devoted member of Chapel Hill. Although she moved to Petersburg, VA she always returned on the second Sunday for worship service. She attended the Jefferson School which was founded by her father's mother-in-law, Martha Reese Jefferson and graduated from high school at the Sussex County Training School in Waverly, VA. Her nursing training was at the Piedmont Nursing School, Burkeville, VA and the Saint Phillips School of Nursing, Richmond, VA
Shortly after the Piedmont Hospital Sanatorium opened, a nursing school for black women was established on the site. This aspect of Piedmont Hospital's history improved the black population at large. The nursing school at Piedmont Sanatorium offered a tuberculosis specific curriculum. The program was only for two years and allowed black women to become certified specifically in tuberculosis nursing. If those women wanted to become Registered Nurses, they had to complete a third year of training at Saint Phillips Hospital in Richmond, VA.
Julia, a Registered Nurse, was employed as a clinical nurse at Virginia State University for 30 years. She was a life member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc, Eta Eta Chapter (a nurse sorority) which is an affiliate of the National Council of Negro Women Inc.
In 1989 Julia Moore, a charter member, was honored as soror of the year. The chapter was founded in 1984 to unite nurses in the Tri-Cities and Southside Virginia areas and has 38 active and retired nurses.
A funeral was held at 11:00 A.M. at the Chapel of Tucker Funeral Home, Petersburg, VA on Saturday, October 8, 2005.
