Ninnie Bet Watkins was the daughter of a Free Black who had been given 200 acres to farm after the Civil War and the end of slavery. She was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, living person in the state of Virginia. In her lifetime, she witnessed the aftermath of slavery and the triumph of the Civil Rights legislation. She saw the replacement of wagons and mules with cars, tractors and airplanes. She watched oil lamps and "outhouses" give way to electricity and indoor plumbing. She endured the Depression and two World Wars, the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War.

At an early age she joined the Calvary Baptist Church, Yale, VA.

Ninnie Bet Jones married Garfield Blakes on 13 December 1903 and Adolphus Watkins on 26 December 1917.

A funeral service for Ninnie Bet Jones Blakes Watkins was held on Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at the Chapel of Tucker's Funeral Home, Petersburg, VA.
