Beloved husband of Tessie Jane Stokley whom he married on January 16, 1898 in Cocke County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Mary Willie Grace Moore, known professionally as Grace Moore, an opera singer and actress; Herbert Briscoe; Martin Stokely; Emily Huff; Estele Carver; Richard Lawson,J Jr.;James Leslie, and Anna Catherine.

Richard was in charge of Loveman's, Inc. a dry-goods business. His son, Richard, Jr. became president of the company when his father passed away.

Richard, Sr. was instrumental in the initial planning and financing that led to the construction of the Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church in Murphy,Cherokee County, North Carolina where his parents were laid to rest.
