Mary Ilean Vanderpool, the daughter of John and Katie (Collins) Monahan, was born on a farm in Cedar Township west of Adaza, Iowa on March 2, 1919 and departed this life August 18, 1999 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 80 years, 5 months and 16 days. Mary attended school through the 8th grade and prior to her marriage, she helped care for her brothers and sisters at home and worked in several homes in the area caring for those who were ill and mothers with new babies. February 23, 1939, Mary Ilean Monahan united in marriage to Oral "Pete" Vanderpool at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Churdan. To this union were born two children. After their marriage, they farmed 5 miles southwest of Churdan for 42 years. They had a farm sale in 1980, and moved into Churdan in 1985. Pete died in 1992 and Mary lived in Churdan until 1997 when she became a resident of the Greene County Long Term Care Facility in Jefferson. Mary was a member of St. Columbkill's Catholic Church in Churdan and a member of the Rosary Society. Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Linda and husband, Harry Knee, of Kingman, Arizona, two grandson and their wives, Shawn and Lora of Excelsior Springs, Missouri and Shannon and Candy of Kearney, Missouri, two grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three brothers; Vincent Monahan of Churdan, Louis Monahan of Jefferson and Martin Monahan of Mason City and two sisters; Martha Block of Long Beach, California and Janie Brown of Fort Dodge. Her parents, husband, a son, Larry in 1967, a grandson, Michael Knee, three brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death. Mass of the Christian burial was held Saturday, August 21, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Columbkill's Catholic Church in Churdan with Rev. Father Dennis Meinen officiating. Interment was made in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan. Richard Carey provided musical selections at the service. Serving as casket bearers were Colin Monahan, Raymond Monahan, Mike Franey, Nathan Guess, Don Franey and Robert Monahan. Holy Rosary was prayed at 3:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service was held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Brown Funeral Home in Churdan.
