Moses was the son of William and Frances Fillingame of North Carolina and Georgia. He served in the Confederate States Army as a private in Company F, 7th Battalion, Mississippi Volunteers. He was wounded and sent home, but word has passed down through the family suggesting he died of measles, which apparently spread to his wife as she died about the same time as he did. Moses and Elizabeth had seven children who grew to maturity, and an eighth about whom nothing is known:

*Daniel, b. 1849, m. Angeline Housley
*Alvin, b. 1852, m. Sarah Angeline Palmer
*Almedia, b. 1854, m. Stephen Johnson
*Alice Jane, b. 1856, m. Hezekiah Slade
*Samuel Benjamin, b. 1859, m. Sarah H. Balcolm
*Elizabeth, b. c1861, m. Wilson Johnson
*Moses, b. March 1863, m. Eliza Ann Randall

The eighth child was discovered in 2009 when grave imaging of the Fillingame Cemetery showed two adults and one child. The name and dates of this child are not known.

Following the death of Moses and Elizabeth Fillingame, the two older boys probably went to work at nearby farms, and the next four children were taken into the household of their aunt, Harriet (Fillingame) Carley, wife of Lyman Carley. It has not been determined who raised the infant, Moses Jr.
