Daniel was the oldest child of Moses Fillingame and Elizabeth Anderson. His parents both died in 1863 when he was about 15 years old. Despite his youth, he served for the Confederate States Army, enlisting in Marion County, Miss. in October 1864 under Captain Wyatt Bayliss, Major Wellborn, and Colonel Terrell. His pension application says he was paroled before the end of the war on account of bad health. His first pension application was dated 6 September 1917. Another pension application dated 5 September 1932 states that Daniel had been a resident of the Confederate Veterans Home at Beauvoir until August 1932.

Daniel died in Purvis at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Q. Broadus, following a six-week illness. He and his wife had eight children: six sons and two daughters.
