William was born William Robert White, the son of Niles A. White and Monai Butler. His parents died when William was very young and he went to live with his maternal grandparents (William and Emma Butler) who gave William and his sister, Ruthann the Bulter surname. When William's grandmother passed away in 1943 he and his sister were sent to Mooseheart School to be raised. Ruthann graduated from Mooseheart in 1948 at which time William was in the process of being adopted by Robert F. and Ethel Elder of Wellesley, Norfolk, Massachusetts.
William R. Elder served in the Marines during the Korean War. He married twice and fathered 7 children. His first wife, Patricia J. (McCarthy) Elder was born in 1933 in Massachusetts, she died in 1966 in California. They married about 1958.
