Ruthann was born Ruthann White in Decatur, Indiana daughter of Niles A. and Monai K. (Butler) White. Ruthann's parents died at a very young age leaving her and her younger brother William Robert 'Bill' White orphaned. They went to live with their maternal grandparents, William and Emma (Lindley) Butler who gave the children the Butler surname. In 1943 their grandmother died and both children were sent to Mooseheart Child City & School in Mooseheart, IL. Ruthann graduated from Mooseheart in 1948. Her brother Bill was in the process of being adopted by Robert F. and Ethel (Churchill) Elder of Wellesley, Massachusetts.
