A tailor by trade, Benjamin married Emily about 1841. They had at least nine children.

He was working as a Richmond policeman in 1860. He enlisted as a Private in Company "A", 25th Battalion (the "City Battalion"), Richmond Local Defense Troops on 17 March 1863, as a substitute for William F. Royster. He served until at least July 1864.

Benjamin died at age 75 of "General Debility" at the City Alms House, next to the Cemetery. His grave in the John H. Bolton plot was marked by a descendant in September 2021. His daughter Anne ("Annie") was one of the workers, most young girls, killed in the munitions plant explosion disaster in Richmond on 13 March 1863; she is buried nearby.
