William enlisted as a Private in Company "D", 1st Battalion, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 17 June 1863. He was later detailed for work in the Quartermaster Department. His sister Annie was killed in the explosion of a Confederate munitions facility in Richmond in 1863.

He died of "consumption," per Cemetery records, and is buried in his brother John's plot. There is no marker visible.

He had originally been buried in John's first plot in Range 27, Sec. 21, but his remains were moved along with other family members in 1890 when the City widened 4th Street.
