Joseph H. Akers was the son of Uriah Akers of the Brush Creek Valley in Bedford Co., now Fulton Co., PA, and his wife Jane Truax. Mr. Akers moved to Martinsburg, Blair Co., PA, about 1828, then relocated to Tyrone, Blair Co., PA in 1871. He was two times married, first to Honor Crawford of Bedford Co. and then to Catharine Ann Baker, widow of John McKown (McGowan). Five children were born to his first marriage: Mrs. S. A. Gibboney, Johnston Crawford Akers, William C. Akers, Wilson Lee Akers, and Emory Akers. His second wife was mother to two children, John and Caroline McKown, at the time Mr. Akers married her. Catharine and Joseph Akers had six children: Mary Akers, Rebecca Jane Akers Lightner, Ellen or (Ella) Akers Kinch, Edmund P. Akers, George Newton Akers, and Anna Graffius Akers.
Funeral services were held at the family residence on Spring Street in Tyrone on July 14th, 1887. Burial was held in Fairview Cemetery in Martinsburg, PA.
