Herman John Abeling was born Hermann Johann Abeling in the village of Düste in Lower Saxony on 10 August 1849 and baptized nine days later at the church in nearby Barnstorf. Herman was the third son of Johann Christian Heinrich (Bagge) Abeling and his second wife, Margaretha Wilhelmine Döbbeling.

At the age of 33, Herman arrived in Honolulu aboard the steamer "Ehrenfels" along with other German contract laborers, destined for the sugar plantations on Kauai. Herman worked at the plantation in Koloa where, in 1885, he married Johanna Schmidt. While in Hawaii the Abelings had five known children: Wilhelm Adolph Ludwig (1888-1898); Marie Helen m. Dilley (1890-1954); Alma Charlotte m. Plume (1892-1947); Anna Louise m. Schmiedeke (1894-1969) and Sophie Wihelmina m. Armstrong (1896-1973).

Around 1901 the Abelings left Hawaii and settled in South San Francisco. Herman died there on 22 May 1910.
