Rita was born Feb. 18, 1931 in Liberty, MO and was raised on a farm outside of Cameron, MO. She was the daughter of Joseph M. and Anna C. (Hickey) Kennedy.

She met Ralph Austin while working at Farmers Insurance Company in Kansas City, MO. They were married on September 2, 1950. They transferred to Aurora, IL in 1954 where they raised their three daughters. Family life was extremely important to her. She was active in the PTA and other school activities. Rita was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed golf. She even shot a hole in one!

Rita had a very caring nature, a wonderful smile, and an inherent love for people. She worked many happy years as the bookkeeper at a local nursing home in Aurora. Ralph and Rita then moved back to Shawnee, KS in 1981. After Ralph's retirement in 1990, they moved to their dream location, Table Rock Lake – a place of many happy activities and memories with their children. They returned to the Kansas City area in 2007 for their remaining years.

Rita's life and love surrounded family. In September 2012, she lost Ralph, her husband of 62 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary Catherine Hegarty and brother Mike Kennedy. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Anne (Bob) Burns of Lampe, MO, Rhonda (Barry) Nelson of Leawood, KS and Rebecca (Mark) Emley of Overland Park, KS. Grandchildren include Christopher Burns, Brian (Amanda) Burns and Anna and Michael Emley. Great grandchildren include Vanessa, and Quentin and Vivian Burns. Rita is also survived by her sister Rose Mayer, and brothers Jim (Donna) Kennedy and Art (Josephine) Kennedy.
