Ralph S. Austin, 85, Leawood, KS, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 20, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS where friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Burial in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Ali Kemp Foundation.
Ralph was born November 27, 1926, in Gentry, MO, the son of William Earl and Rebecca Runyan Austin and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He started a 43 year career with Farmers Insurance in the Kansas City area, moving to Aurora, IL in 1954 and returning to Kansas City in 1981. In Aurora, Ralph was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Civil Defense Agency and received his private pilot's license. In retirement he was a Stone County volunteer fireman at Table Rock Lake. Ralph was known for his love of family, fishing and his holiday gifts of homemade peanut brittle. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Ruth Summa, Doris Kemp Kurtwright, Delores Summa and Max Austin. Ralph is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rita Kennedy Austin, three daughters and their husbands, Ruth Anne (Robert) Burns, Rhonda (Barry) Nelson, Rebecca (Mark) Emley, grandchildren,Chris and Brian (Amanda) Burns, Anna and Michael Emley, and great grandchildren, Vanessa, Vivian and Quentin Burns.
