Our darling husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and best friend, SHERMAN WILLIAM (Bill) ALLRED, was called back to his heavenly home on March 5, 2013.
S. William Allred was born June 18, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Sherman and Eva Lenora Ericksen Allred. Bill was raised in a very close and loving family. At a young age, he developed a determined and steadfast work ethic that served him well throughout his life. His many stories of delivering papers in Idaho in waist deep snow while carrying his bike over his head or asking girls to carry his books home from school because he was doing so much extra credit increased in humor and pathos with each telling. "When I was a boy . . ." always meant a great time and a huge laugh - Especially by him. Bill had a great sense of humor and a quick wit; and there was always that huge smile and that bark of a laugh. Oh, but he was fun to be with.
Bill received his B.A. from the University of Utah in 1943 and his M.D. in 1946. Bill married his sweetheart, Carolynn Horne in 1946. Shortly after their marriage, Bill and Carolynn moved to Chicago for his orthopedic residency at Northwestern University. While working in the children's hospital near Chicago, Bill's integrity and work ethic brought him to the attention of Charles F. Kettering, renowned inventor and medical philanthropist. Both Bill and Carolynn were warmly welcomed into the Kettering family in Chicago and built a lifelong relationship of friendship, trust and love.
After completing his residency, Bill was called to serve as a captain in the U.S. Medical Corp. from 1951 to April of 1953. Following his honorable discharge from military service, Bill and Carolynn returned to Salt Lake City where he began his private practice in Orthopedic Surgery. Bill built a successful practice by serving his patients with deep care and unwavering integrity for over forty years. Bill was a member of the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons and was instrumental in establishing the Orthopedic Training Program at the University of Utah and LDS Hospital. Bill also served as Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Primary Children's Medical Center.
Bill loved his family, neighbors and home at Village Circle. Bill and Carolynn had a unique gift of creating a loving and welcoming home where the door, their arms, and the backyard swimming pool were always open. Bill's family enjoyed many summers vacationing together at the Blue Lagoon Villas in Laguna Beach, California. Bill and Carolynn also enjoyed many vacations with their friends golfing, laughing and playing tennis at Death Valley, California.
After retirement, Bill and Carolynn found time to take multiple adult LDS institute classes and to focus their time and talents on extended family genealogical research. They served a mission together in the Salt Lake Liberty Stake. They also spent their Saturdays at the Joseph Smith Building greeting visitors and conducting tours. Bill had a deep and abiding love of his Savior, Jesus Christ and an unwavering testimony and love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He adored his sweet Carolynn who was always at his side adoring him right back. His love for his family was shown through numerous words and loving actions. He never missed a family event. "I'll be there." And he always was. His memory as a sweet and devoted husband, selfless patriarch, fun and loving father and uncle will be cherished always.
Bill is survived by his beautiful wife, Carolynn, sons Randy (Susan Memmott); Michael (Susie McArdle); Christopher (TBD); and Judy Clark Allred Babcock (Bob); six grandchildren Bill Allred, Mark Allred (Bryn Dahle), Jamie Allred Barnes (Steve), Tony Allred (Whitney Skinner), Matt Allred, Amanda Allred; five great grandchildren Stephen Barnes, Jr., Jack Barnes, Savanna Belle Barnes, Easton Allred, Owen Allred; close nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Sherman and Eva Lenora Ericksen Allred, his sisters Elaine Smith, Renee Barr, Marjorie Williams and his brothers Alan and Gary Allred.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 11th, 2013 at 11:00am at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 S Wasatch Drive. A viewing will be held Sunday March 10th from 6 to 8pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 S, SLC, UT and also prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30am at the Stake Center.
