Carolynn Horne Allred
March 29, 1926 - March 10, 2016
Our dear Carolynn passed away peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 10, 2016. She was born on March 29, 1926 to Dr. Lyman Merrill & Myrtle Swainston Horne in Salt Lake City, Utah. She came from a family of eight children, and was one of three sets of twins. Her twin Marilyn was never far from her side throughout her life. She married Sherman William Allred in the Salt Lake Temple on August 29, 1946 and they had three sons.
Carolynn graduated from East High and attended the University of Utah where she met her favorite medical student "Bill Allred." She was active in music and school activities. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and graduated with a degree in Music & Child Development. Her bright mind loved the written word, Puccini opera, great art, and all things that lift the human spirit in beauty. She had an infectious love of life which touched us all. She was athletic, competitive, strong and fun, with a tender side that cared for everyone around her. She would always ask, "what can I do for you?" She was her husband's strongest advocate and stood by his side as they continued his education in Chicago at Northwestern University. She and Bill became friends with the Charles Kettering family while at the Hinsdale Clinic during the polio epidemic. They returned to Salt Lake City after several work related moves where they raised their family and Bill set up his medical practice. Her prowess on the tennis court was admired by all and her golf game was just as amazing. She loved politics and may find this election more entertaining from her heightened view. Some people make the world better just by being in it. That is what our dear Carolynn meant to us.
She is survived by her three sons - Randy (Susan) Allred, Michael (Susie) Allred, Christopher Allred. Grandchildren - Bill (Lauren) Allred, Mark (Bryn) Allred, Jamie (Steve) Barnes, Tony (Whitney) Allred, Matthew (Kim) Allred, Amanda (Landon) Clark. Great Grandchildren - Stephen, Jack & Savanna Barnes, Cameron Allred, Easton, Owen & Pierson Allred. Brothers - Dr. Jonathan (Colleen) Horne, Dr. Robert (Cathy) Horne, David (Barbara) Horne. Sister - Alice (Cloyd, deceased) Chamberlain. Beloved extended family - Diana (Larry), Charlene (Steve) Crawley, Meri Carol Farr, Steve (Serena) Farr, Judy (Bob) Babcock, Scott (Katie) Babcock, Collin Babcock & their families.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Harriet, brother, Richard & great granddaughter Alta Allred.
The quote, "some mother's give birth, other's give life," describes her care of so many. We shall miss our mother, grandmother, sister & friend. The Allred Family expresses their appreciation to Horizon Hospice.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 12:00 noon at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 South Wasatch Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
