Dr. Edward Clarke Beardslee, of Woodcrest Villa, formerly of Wrightsville, died February 7, 2013, in Lancaster.
Born April 21, 1941, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Herbert Clarke Beardslee and Gertrude Elizabeth Stouffer Beardslee. He is also preceded in death by his step mother, Rebecca Gontz Beardslee.
Ed graduated from Chambersburg Area High School, Chambersburg, (1959), Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, with a B.S. in Mathematics (1963), University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, with an M.S. in Mathematics (1966), and The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, with a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, (1972).
He was employed at Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana (1966-1969) as an Instructor of Mathematics; at Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington, (1973-1979) as an Associate Professor of Mathematics Edcation; self employed as an author and consultant in mathematics and computer education (1979-1983); and at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Millersville, PA (1983-2001) as a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science (1983-1990) and Professor of Elementary & Early Childhood Education Mathematics (1990-2001).
Mr. Beardslee grew up in Chambersburg and was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church youth programs. He received the Order of the Arrow Award while involved with the Boy Scouts of America.
In high school, he enjoyed music and drama activities thus beginning his life-long love for music. Ed was an author of mathematics textbooks and activity books. He was also an educational computer author and programmer. He conducted workshops for teachers to teach mathematics, calculators and computers using games, activities, and manipulative aids that he had created for grades K-12. Ed was a consultant and speaker in mathematics and computer education to school districts locally and in the west. He aided in the design of an interactive video based course in mathematics for adult learners in 1988 and also served as a consulting educator, writing calculator activities and making teaching suggestions for a complete elementary math series for grades K-8 published in 1987. Ed was active in professional mathematics organizations and served on many committees and in leadership roles both in PA and in the Northwest. He received leadership and service awards from the Washington State Mathematics Council (1980), PA Council of Teachers of Mathematics (1987), the "Educate for Service Award, Service through Professional Achievement" from the Alumni Association, Elizabethtown College (1991) and was included in the "Who's Who in American Education", Third Edition, 1992-1993.
Mr. Beardslee loved to travel with his wife and family and visited all 50 states. He also participated in a faculty exchange program with the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland in 1995. In addition, he sang tenor in a number of choruses and choirs, including the York Symphony Chorus and Singers and most recently in the Chancel Choir at Advent Lutheran Church. Family was very important to him and he cherished the time that he could spend with his daughters, their husbands and children.
Ed is survived by his wife, Marilyn Anne Brubaker Beardslee of 49 years and two daughters, Becky B. Jachimowicz, wife of Christopher S. Jachimowicz of Topton and Lois B. Carlisle of Elizabethtown; four grandchildren, David C. Jachimowicz, Audrey A. Jachimowicz, Alan D. Carlisle and Matthew D. Carlisle. Also surviving are a brother, Paul W. Beardslee, husband of Anne of Elkins, WV; and a sister, Lois I. Weaverling of Chambersburg; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Ed will be held February 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, York. Ed's pastors, the Rev. Brenda M. Ritterpusch and the Rev. David L. Ritterpusch will officiate. Friends and family will be received from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Owens Hall of the church.
