In Loving Memory
Carol Ann Brodsky
4/17/1935 - 1/30/2013

Carol Ann Getty Brodsky, 77, of Rockton died unexpectedly, but peacefully at her home on January 30, 2013 while getting ready do the thing she loved most... teaching at Shirland School.

Many of us knew Carol by her infectious laugh, which she inherited in equal parts from her parents, Grace and Johnston who raised Carol and her two brothers, John and Bill, in the venerable Chicago neighborhood of Berwyn.

After receiving her degree from Cornell College in 1957, she moved to Freeport, Illinois to begin her teaching career. There, she met Fred, her husband of 53 years and gave birth to her oldest son.

She and Fred moved to Muskegon, Michigan in 1965 where her youngest son, Ken was born. Spending summer evenings enjoying Lake Michigan with her dear friends Dick and Judy Wilcox and Ruth and Leigh Stevens were among her fondest memories.

In 1979, she and Fred moved to Rockton, Illinois. What began as very difficult move, became an unexpected opportunity, taking a teaching position at Shirland School in 1982. To say she "taught" at Shirland School, fails to fully capture the impact she had on the school and the community during her long tenure. As "Mrs. Brodsky" she touched the lives of countless children, both rejoicing in their triumphs, and comforting their occasional sorrows. Known simply as "Brodsky" to her fellow teachers, she was a trusted colleague and mentor. She loved Shirland School like a second family.

Carol is preceded in death by her mother and father and her brother Bill Getty. She is survived by her husband Fred, her brother John (Janice) Getty and her sister-in-law Marlene (Vainisi) Getty, by her sons, Jon "Fred" (Elizabeth) Brodsky and Kenneth (Rosa) Brodsky, by her grandchildren John Brodsky, Katherine Brodsky, Alexander Brodsky, and William Brodsky and by her nieces and nephews Bill Getty, Rick Getty, Lori Getty, Andrea Getty and Allison Getty.

Funeral ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2013 in McCorkle Funeral Home, 767 N Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, Illinois with Pastor Kendell Nordstrom of First Congregational Church, Beloit, Wisconsin officiating. Burial will be in Rockton Township Cemetery, 600 West Street, Rockton, Illinois. A visitation will be held in the funeral home from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 3.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Carol Brodsky Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit deserving students at Shirland School.
