Karel Frederick “Fred” Brodsky, 82, of Rockton, IL, passed away at 9:35 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Born August 4, 1934 in Lemmon, South Dakota, the son of Gerry and Adelaide (Topp) Brodsky. He graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in electrical engineering. Although his heart never really left the back roads of his beloved home state, Fred had a way of bonding tightly with each of the communities in which he lived, Freeport, IL, Muskegon, MI, and Rockton, IL. He married, Carol Getty in Freeport, IL, in 1959 she was a first grade teacher, it was there his first son, Fred was born in 1962. A few years later the family moved to Muskegon, MI, where their second son, Ken was born in 1966. In 1979, he took a job with Warner Electric, and moved the family to Rockton, IL, where he spent the rest of his life. Fred was a good and decent man whose boundless, but quiet, generosity made other’s lives better in ways both large and small; he was a man of few words. His wife Carol was well known for her love of Christmas, but a little known fact is that Fred may have loved it even more. In Muskegon he was famous for putting down the top on his cherry red Ford convertible to bring home the Christmas tree, the more snow the better. Glee is the only word to describe the pleasure he took in assembling toys on Christmas Eve, first for his own children, and then for his four beloved grandchildren. Fred was a brilliant, creative electrical engineer. He played a role in designing the auxiliary propulsion units of our fleet of nuclear submarines and revolutionized the design of cruise controls used in Ford cars. His wife Carol’s love of education was so contagious that Fred was inspired to run for, and win a seat on the Mona Shores School Board in Muskegon, where he served with two dear friends, Leigh Stevens and Judy Wilcox. After Fred retired he spent countless hours for Habitat for Humanity. Fred spent the past few years struggling with Alzheimer’s disease, and our family is grateful for the warm and tender care he received from the team at Highview in the Woodlands. The effort they made to get to know Fred as a person, not merely a patient, was a great comfort to us all.
