George Washington Steel was born as the third child and only son of Henry and Marian "Mary" Steel in Van Buren, Crawford Co., AR. The family soon moved on to Texas and were in Wise County when the 1860 census was taken and other children had been added. The youngest, Sinthiann, was the only one born in TX. The family then moved on toward central TX where George Washington Steel married Parsceller Taylor 31 Dec 1873 in Bosque Co. Then they were found in Bell Co., TX for the 1880 census.

The couple had seven children (Maramer Steel, Nettie Steel, Henry Steel, John F Steel,James U Steel, Samuel Steel, George Washington Steel, Jr.) before Parscellar died shortly after the birth of the son, George Washington Steel, Jr. in 1892.

George Wasington Steel and his children, except for the youngest, are found in the Henry Smith Selman household for the 1900 census. It can be noted that the oldest son, Henry Steel with spelling of Steele is found buried in the same cemetery in Bexar Co., TX that the daughter Nettie Steel Selman is buried in. Grandson, Elmer Steele is buried in the Breckenridge Cemetery, also. He was only 16 when he died.
