Copley A. Nott Dies ~ Former Hotel Manager ~ Conducted American House on Site of Woolworth Building Many Years Ago ~ Burial To Be Made Here ~ Associated with Col. Staples in Erection of Thousand Island House ~
Copley A. Nott, aged 85 years, a former resident of this city, died at the home of his son, Claude R. Nott of Pelham, early Sunday morning. He had been in ill health for the past two months, suffering from heart trouble. He was one of the best known hotel men in New York State, a business in which he had been actively engaged for the past 50 years. He was born in Rossie, St. Lawrence county October 11, 1837, the son of Reuben and Olive Bailey Nott. In his early life he attended the rural schools at Rossie and later moved to this city with his parents. His father took over the management of the old American hotel, then located where the Woolworth building now stands.He was married October 7, 1863. to Cora A. Clark, daughter of James and Sabra M. Clark of this city. On the death of his father, a few years after his marriage, Mr. Nott took over the management of the American hotel.In 1873 he joined Col. O. G. Staples in the erection of the Thousand Island hotel in Alexandria Bay, which they conducted jointly until 1877, when Mr. Nott sold out to his partner. At the opening of Congress Hall hotel in Syracuse in 1877 Mr. Nott was its proprietor in which capacity he continued for a period of 18 years. For five years thereafter he was joint proprietor with his son in the New Butterfield House at Syracuse. At the expiration of his hotel work in Syracuse Mr. Nott went to New York and became the manager of the Hotel Stanley an apartment in West 47th street. At the end of two years he resigned from this position to become associated with his son in the management of the Somerset hotel in the same street.He was a member of the Jefferson County Society of New York City and of the Episcopal church. He is survived by his wife, Cora A. Nott; one son, Claude R. Nott both of Pelham; one brother, Theodore Nott of Denver, Colorado, and nieces, Miss Grace Nott and Mrs. Owen R. Owens, both of this city. The funeral will be held from the home in Pelham on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The body will be brought to this city, arriving at 9:20 o'clock on Wednesday morning, being taken from the train to Brookside cemetery where burial will take place.
