"This cemetery on the well-traveled old postal route between New York and Boston is referred to here as the 'Old Burial Ground', for that is what the plaque at the entrance reads, which was placed by the Daughter of the American Revolution in 1955, and seems most appropriate. Know by a variety of names, the 'King Street', 'King's Highway Cemetery', or Colonial Cemetery, this is perhaps one of the oldest lots in town. Typically every parcel of land has some sort of identification in a town's tax records, but the tax map shows no such identity for the 'Colonial Cemetery' as it is know in Westport's records, a testament to its age. The King Street postal route was the mail thoroughfare of the time, and perhaps it was the wish of these early ancestors to be the center of activity? For the estimated 143 graves and 6 tombs that fill this heavily-trafficked corner lot, it is anything but a peaceful resting place. The earliest burial is that of Elizabeth Taylor in 1705, and is possibly the oldest documented in town. The most recent was a member of the Marvin family, laid to rest in the family tomb . In compliance with the decedent's wish, the tomb was locked and the key presented to the First Selectman [like a mayor in a larger city] for safe keeping during the 1949 reconsecration ceremony.
