Benjamin, located south and west of Spanish Fork (Spanish Fork can be seen in the distance) and about three miles north of Payson, near the shore of Utah Lake. Benjamin Franklin Stewart, together with his brother Andrew Jackson Stewart and others from Payson, in the year 1862, surveyed and laid the foundation of the town, which was named Benjamin in his honor. Among those locating and establishing homes here were the families of Shedrack Richardson, Enoch Gurr, Tom Baker, Ephraim Kapple, Edward Stocks, Elijah Haws, Isaac Rogers, Dr. George Hone, Sr., and David Hone. These folks subdued the forests of grease-woods, planted all kinds of grain, laid out roads, and built bridges, fences, and, most important, a canal from the Spanish Fork river with which to irrigate their crops. Logs were hauled from the nearby canyons, and homes of one or two rooms were constructed, some with dirt floors and all with dirt roofs and fireplaces where the cooking was done. Fires were banked at night to avoid the necessity of borrowing fire from a neighbor, as matches were a scarce item seldom found in the homes. Paper was used to cover the windows and blankets were hung for doors. Light was provided by candles for those who had them; others managed with a bitch, which was a piece of rag soaked in tallow and lighted. B. F. Stewart drilled the first artesian well and log houses were later replaced with larger, well-constructed abode houses. Enoch Gurr was one of the first men to perfect adobes in the community. Benjamin, Utah was founded in 1862 by Philander Barrett Stewart. He also founded the town of Payson in 1850. The burial ground for this little community is located on a hill south of town. The first person laid to rest here was a baby of the S. M. Richardson family. Five young people - Tom and May Yates, Minnie Okey, Lottie Hawkins, and Sarah Ann Reese - who drowned in Utah Lake in 1883 while boat riding, are also buried in this cemetery. This sad disaster was along remembered. On June 22, 1885, B. F. Stewart, the founder and leader of Benjamin, was struck by lightning and killed while sitting in his bugg near his home.
