Entrance to DuBois Cemetery as of September 2007. DuBois is land-locked and surrounded by farm fields. A public easement (20' wide and 613.19' in length) accesses the cemetery. Martin DuBois donated 1 acre of land in 1841 to be DuBois Cemetery. Martin's mother, Sarah, was the first burial in the cemetery (1841). The last known burial was Ella May Every (1934). There are over 125 graves in the cemetery. During the summer of 2007, thanks to nearly 60 volunteers, descendants, and a Girl Scout Gold Award project (Allison Findlay), DuBois Cemetery was rescued from more than 70 years of neglect and deterioration. It was choked with vegetation that had completely covered many of the tombstones. Through probing, nearly 30 headstones, footstones, and bases were discovered and brought to the surface by the volunteers. A dedication ceremony for newly-beautified DuBois Cemetery is planned for late spring, 2008. A large marker listing all of the known burials will be unveiled at that time.
