Mount Zion Cemetery
Also known as Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery
Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, USA
The church's first building was erected next to the oldest portion of the cemetery in 1892, all on an acre of land donated by Mrs. L. J. (Bud) Groover (daughter-in-law of J. Chapel Groover) to the trustees of Mt. Zion Church of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. When that first church building became dilapidated in the early 1900's, the old structure was torn down and a former schoolhouse building was hauled into service (using a mule and log rollers) on land across the Post Oak Road donated by J. S. (Jim) Pitts. The church facility as and where it stands today was begun on five acres of property donated by Mr. and Mrs. A. A. McPherson in 1964, with the sanctuary completed in 1966. Subsequent renovations and expansions of the present church buildings occurred in 1968, 1976, 1985, 1997, and 2008. Zion United Methodist Church, Marietta, Georgia Centennial History, 1892-1992" (1992).]
