The exact location of Fort Jefferson Burial Ground is unknown but is believed to have been outside the walls of the fort to the north on a hill.
Fort Jefferson was built by the Army of General Authur St. Clair in October 1791. It was used as a military post from 1791-1795 during the Northwest Indian War, It was the most northern post from 1791-1793 in a chain of forts beginning with Fort Washington(Cincinnati). Fort Jefferson was a refuge for the survivors of St. Clair's Defeat also known as the Battle of the Wabash that occurred the morning of November 4, 1791, a day's march north of Fort Jefferson. It was the worst defeat ever by Native Americans upon the United States Army. Chief Little Turtle lead the Native American tribes in the surprise attack.. After the battle the soldiers and civilians ,perhaps 200, who survived retreated to Fort Jefferson where many of the mortality wounded who are known and some unknown died and were buried outside the fort.
