Add PhotosThe Manavon Tract, said to have been so called from the Lenape name of the surrounding country, but more probably from the parish in Wales in which David Lloyd was born, comprised one thousand acres situated upon the two banks of the French Creek. It was patented in 1713 to David Lloyd, who was the first justice in Chester County, for many years Speaker of the Assembly, and a bitter opponent of William Penn. The earliest settler upon it was Francis Buckwalter, to whom Lloyd sold 650 in December, 1720, for £195. In 1722, the tract became part of Charlestown Township.
Francis Buckwalter, having lived but a few years after his purchase in Manavon, died there was the first to be buried at this place. Though it is sometimes thought this was originally a burial ground used by the Lenape, that location was actually further up the peninsula near Black Rock. The land containing the burial ground later passed through several owners before being sold in 1785 to Henry Rhoades — the area becoming thusly known as "Rhaodes' Field." Several of Buckwalter's descendants were said to lie there, containing, with neighbors and others, about 75 graves altogether. The last person known to be buried there being interred around 1795.
No trace of the burial ground remains. Today, the site is occupied by housing.
