Nicolaifriedhof Bielefeld
Stadtkreis Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
In 1874, land north-east of the city center was purchased for the Nicolaifriedhof. The original facility was completed after just one year of construction. The main feature was the straight path layout with longitudinal and transverse paths. Family graves were laid out along the paths. The areas in the middle were covered with row graves. The facility's facilities were rather simple. The areas were densely occupied; there were no plants between or behind the graves. The cemetery was taken over by the city administration just one year later.
At the turn of the century, the cemetery's capacity was exhausted, so an expansion became necessary. This was created on the other side of the connecting path from Herforder to Eckendorfer Straße. Until recently, the cemetery visually consisted of two parts, as the cemetery was bordered by fences on the right and left of the path. In the meantime, the fences have been removed and an entrance gate installed.
With the inauguration of the Sennefriedhof on August 15, 1912, the magistrate decided to stop allocating row graves. Only elective graves are still allowed to be used today.
Part of the cemetery was converted into public green space in 1987.
